Description

Modern Aramaic in Practice employs the latest and best pedagogical methodology to teach Neo-Aramaic (Turoyo).

This book takes absolute beginners from an introduction to the alphabet to the point where they can converse in Modern Aramaic. It is the first comprehensive learning book in English, containing clear introductions to the key building blocks of Modern Aramaic grammar.

It includes a range of exercises and vocabulary to develop confidence in language skills. There are reading passages, and also a dictionary, Modern Aramaic to English, and English to Modern Aramaic. Solutions to the exercises are also provided.

This highly accessible and well structured grammar of Turoyo is the perfect introduction to this fascinating Aramaic dialect, whether as a coursebook for students of Semitic languages, or as a self-contained guide for those who wish to study at home. Everything a beginner needs is to be found within its covers.

David G.K. Taylor

It is most welcome to have this introductory grammar - the first in English - to Turoyo, the Modern Aramaic dialect of Turabdin (SE Turkey).  Systematically and clearly presented, and provided with exercises, it also has the advantage of being by a native speaker.

Sebastian P. Brock

Dr Oez’s seminal text enhances and systematises the Neo-Aramaic language, which has been analysed and structured in a modern style. This method serves as a linguistic stepping stone into the future, enriching the culture and identity of the Turabdin people. We hope that it will help strengthen the bonds that tie our widely dispersed communities with their roots.
